Las Vegas Raiders

A passer of the future in Mendoza, and a B-, for the Raiders.

After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Raiders committed. Fernando Mendoza is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

Landing Branch that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They are betting Nowakowski proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

The Clark pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and offensive lineman. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.1 · Pick 1 · Fernando Mendoza · QB · rank 4
In pick 1 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Denzel Boston · WR · rank 30
Denzel Boston at the 36th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Michael Taaffe · S · rank 68
They paid sticker price for Michael Taaffe in Round 3, Pick 3, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Zachariah Branch · WR · rank 61
Somehow Zachariah Branch was still sitting there in the 102nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Bud Clark · S · rank 101
A surprising call. With edge rusher and offensive lineman still to address, they spent slot 117 on Bud Clark, a safety they were not short of.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Gracen Halton · DL · rank 126
They read the board right and Gracen Halton was the payoff at pick No. 134. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.35 · Pick 175 · Domani Jackson · CB · rank 176
By-the-book stuff, Domani Jackson at No. 175 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.4 · Pick 185 · Riley Nowakowski · TE · rank 216
Riley Nowakowski at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.27 · Pick 208 · Kaelon Black · RB · rank 217
Kaelon Black at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Eli Heidenreich · WR · rank 240
A big swing on Eli Heidenreich at pick 219, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
