Somebody took the Patriots to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
Dart at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Sturdivant pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left interior defensive lineman open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Travis Hunter in No. 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value.
Deontae Lawson at slot 73 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor itch, scratched.
No drama and no debate, Jake Briningstool went about where he belonged in the 76th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 97 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They jumped the gun on J. Michael Sturdivant, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jaxson Dart at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Josaiah Stewart at par in the 186th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Chip Trayanum in the 207th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
