The Patriots spent real capital to be 97 picks early on Steven Parker, and the board is going to hold them to it. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Stutsman. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy bit of business in the Round 7 slot, where Jonah Monheim graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Garrett Dellinger at the 220th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Xavier Truss at pick No. 221 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Micah Morris. It fills a real need, too.
Xavier Nwankpa in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Tony Grimes, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Circle this one: Danny Stutsman at pick No. 229 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jay Toia in the 230th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Steven Parker this early at slot 234. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Rod Moore in Round 7, Pick 27, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a running back like Le'Veon Moss reach pick 243 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Julian Fleming in No. 247 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Nic Anderson at pick 248, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Ben Yurosek was still sitting there in the 249th pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zach Rice. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
