Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Chargers spent the 226th pick on Carson Steele, a name the board had a full 27 spots lower.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 19 they get a sticky cover corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, Chop Robinson at No. 37 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 51 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Braelon Allen at slot 95 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Dallin Holker, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cedric Johnson at the 142nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nothing to complain about; Jacob Cowing went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A conviction pick on Omar Speights at pick No. 197 that the board grades a round light. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Carson Steele at slot 226 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
