For all the boxes ticked, the Chargers skipped the loudest one: interior defensive lineman is exactly as bare as it was.
Williams falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had Kamari Lassiter higher than pick No. 37, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kingsley Suamataia slid further than he should have, and No. 69 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Donovan Edwards in Round 4, Pick 5, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value with a capital V on James Williams in the 142nd overall pick, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Justin Eboigbe in the 183rd pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in slot 226: Omar Speights for less than the market said. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
