The rest of the league had time to spare on Drake Nugent; the Chargers did not wait, grabbing him 80 spots ahead at pick 69.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it. A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
They took Kris Jenkins at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Drake Nugent at Round 3, Pick 5 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They did well to land Khyree Jackson in slot 109, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Braelon Allen at pick No. 139, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Javon Baker. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked AJ Barner enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 183. It fills a real need, too.
A reach for J.J. Weaver in the 223rd overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach on Myles Cole in Round 7, Pick 36; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
