You build a draft on nights like this. Curtis Jacobs had no business being available in the 256th overall pick, and the Chargers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Reaching for Cole left real value on the table behind him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 18 they get a sticky cover corner, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Patrick Paul at Round 2, Pick 5 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
They paid up for Zach Frazier at slot 49 when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Brenden Rice at the 69th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Dillon Johnson in No. 106, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Justin Rogers in the 139th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They jumped the gun on AJ Barner, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Steal is underselling it; LaDarius Henderson at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A wild overpay on Myles Cole in pick No. 223, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Curtis Jacobs at Round 7, Pick 36 is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
