Nobody else had Junior Colson anywhere near the Round 2 slot. The Chargers did, by 34 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. However the rest shakes out, Henderson at that price is a win they earned.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with interior defensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A big swing on Junior Colson at the 37th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Trey Benson at pick No. 69 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at slot 106 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They went early on Theo Johnson in Round 5, Pick 3, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They let LaDarius Henderson come to them and pounced at the 183rd pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Hunter Nourzad at slot 223 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
They reached into another round for DeMonte Capehart, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
