There is reaching, and then there is Jeremy Flax at slot 223. The Chargers jumped the board by 29 and dared it to prove them wrong. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Getting Haynesworth where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Interior defensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Troy Franklin slipping to Round 2, Pick 5 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Caelen Carson in slot 69; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jarrian Jones. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Sione Vaki at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Circle this one: Sincere Haynesworth at the 183rd overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jeremy Flax this early at the 223rd pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had cheaper options than Zion Logue at Round 7, Pick 36, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
