The Chargers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Theo Johnson at Round 3, Pick 17 regardless, 70 picks early. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
The Wilson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Tyler Guyton worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Sedrick Van Pran in pick No. 61 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Khyree Jackson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Theo Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Audric Estime. It fills a real need, too.
Blake Corum at slot 111 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Johnny Wilson in pick No. 117 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on Keith Randolph Jr. in No. 139; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
AJ Barner in the Round 6 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
You do not let a linebacker like Michael Barrett reach the 207th overall pick and blink. They did not. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid up for J.J. Weaver at pick 223 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Mark Perry went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 27. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Isaac Guerendo at the 256th pick, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
