Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chargers were there to profit. Jaylan Ford, the No. 183 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 223rd overall pick. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The cost of the Barner reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Quinyon Mitchell at Round 2, Pick 5 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Trey Benson in the 69th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Matt Goncalves at slot 106 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Keith Randolph Jr. in the 139th overall pick says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, AJ Barner well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
The board fumbled Jaylan Ford all the way to pick No. 223, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
J.J. Weaver in pick 256 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
