Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Chargers spent Round 4, Pick 6 on Theo Johnson, a name the board had a full 46 spots lower. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Benson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
In the end it comes back to Taliese Fuaga, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A conviction pick on Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 40 that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at pick No. 51 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Brenden Rice in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Mike Sainristil at the 83rd pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Trey Benson at pick 103 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Theo Johnson. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
James Williams in pick No. 139 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Braelon Allen at par in slot 155, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into AJ Barner at No. 183, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
They read the board right and Jaylan Ford was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 24. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Zion Logue in the 223rd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
J.J. Weaver slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
