The rest of the league had time to spare on Cornelius Johnson; the Chargers did not wait, grabbing him 112 spots ahead at pick No. 256.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Kneeland steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Rome Odunze at No. 17 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on T.J. Tampa in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 48 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Blake Fisher well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Darius Robinson in pick 106 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A slide stopped in the 117th pick, with Marshawn Kneeland worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Justin Rogers in the 139th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for AJ Barner at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Trey Knox at par in Round 6, Pick 8, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Jalen Berger at the 201st pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
A wild overpay on Isaac Guerendo in pick No. 211, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Mark Perry in pick 212 says they were not listening. A minor itch, scratched.
Eric Gentry at No. 223 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It adds depth where they could use a little.
David Ugwoegbu at slot 241 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Cornelius Johnson in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
