Los Angeles Chargers

Good, not great, for the Chargers: B.

The rest of the league had time to spare on Cornelius Johnson; the Chargers did not wait, grabbing him 112 spots ahead at pick No. 256.

Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Kneeland steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 11
Rome Odunze at No. 17 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 39
No edge and no loss on T.J. Tampa in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
By-the-book stuff, Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 48 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 98
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Blake Fisher well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 120
Darius Robinson in pick 106 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Marshawn Kneeland · DE-EDGE · rank 103
A slide stopped in the 117th pick, with Marshawn Kneeland worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Justin Rogers · DL · rank 165
Justin Rogers in the 139th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.18 · Pick 154 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 198
They reached a country mile for AJ Barner at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Trey Knox · TE · rank 186
They took Trey Knox at par in Round 6, Pick 8, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
R6.26 · Pick 201 · Jalen Berger · RB · rank 212
Jalen Berger at the 201st pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
R6.36 · Pick 211 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 257
A wild overpay on Isaac Guerendo in pick No. 211, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Mark Perry · S · rank 252
Value said wait; Mark Perry in pick 212 says they were not listening. A minor itch, scratched.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Eric Gentry · LB · rank 263
Eric Gentry at No. 223 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · David Ugwoegbu · OLB-EDGE · rank 239
David Ugwoegbu at slot 241 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 368
Cornelius Johnson in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
