The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chargers reached some 53 spots for Trey Knox, and value like that does not grow back.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Phillips. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Adding Miles Sanders by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 19th pick they get a sticky cover corner, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They robbed the room for Brian Thomas Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Graham Barton slid further than he should have, and the 65th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No drama and no debate, Christian Haynes went about where he belonged in pick No. 69. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Roman Wilson at No. 102 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Audric Estime at slot 126 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached a country mile for Trey Knox at Round 4, Pick 33, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on Renardo Green in No. 139, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at slot 160 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fair-plus on Justin Rogers, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Jefferson at pick No. 171, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good price on Grayson Murphy in pick 178, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylen Harrell well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Andru Phillips in the 206th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Austin Stogner at pick 210 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nathaniel Watson at the 223rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Rondell Bothroyd. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Isaac Guerendo in slot 256 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
