The Theo Johnson pick is the one that will follow the Chargers into the fall. They took him 45 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.

However the rest shakes out, Green at that price is a win they earned. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 26
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 68
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Benson in pick No. 40, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 44
Kris Jenkins is a better player than pick 59 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 52
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Kiran Amegadjie worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.22 · Pick 85 · Sedrick Van Pran · C · rank 89
Sedrick Van Pran in slot 85 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 151
A big swing on Theo Johnson at No. 106, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 139
They paid sticker price for Kamal Hadden in pick No. 139, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Renardo Green · S · rank 152
A safety of that caliber at the 181st pick is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Jaylen Harrell · DE-EDGE · rank 206
They talked themselves into Jaylen Harrell at the 183rd overall pick, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Austin Stogner · TE · rank 205
They barely believed it either: Austin Stogner still on the board at Round 7, Pick 3. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 288
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DeMonte Capehart well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
