Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers checked most of the boxes and earned a B.

Future A+

The rest of the league had time to spare on Lideatrick Griffin; the Chargers did not wait, grabbing him 70 spots ahead at slot 214. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Wilson. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 36
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a go-to option on the outside, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 39
By-the-book stuff, T.J. Tampa at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.19 · Pick 51 · Jermaine Burton · WR · rank 48
Good price on Jermaine Burton in the 51st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 80
They liked Mike Sainristil enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 69. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 104
Khyree Jackson in No. 98 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 79
Circle this one: Roman Wilson at pick No. 106 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 155
They reached a country mile for Ty'Ron Hopper at No. 125, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 151
Theo Johnson in slot 132 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 187
A big swing on Michael Barrett at Round 5, Pick 27, well ahead of any board in the building. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 198
They jumped the gun on AJ Barner, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.32 · Pick 207 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 223
Jase McClellan at the 207th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.34 · Pick 209 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 257
They reached into another round for Isaac Guerendo, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
R6.39 · Pick 214 · Lideatrick Griffin · WR · rank 284
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Lideatrick Griffin. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 222
Tanor Bortolini at pick 223 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 288
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DeMonte Capehart well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
