Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chargers spent pick 96 on Theo Johnson, a name most had 55 spots down the list. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They banked enough surplus on Fashanu to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Adding Luke Fortner by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
A slide stopped in pick 24, with Olumuyiwa Fashanu worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Sedrick Van Pran well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A conviction pick on Trey Benson at Round 2, Pick 24 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Jalen McMillan at the 69th pick when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Khyree Jackson this early at the 79th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Theo Johnson in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid a round early for Darius Robinson in the 106th pick, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Justin Rogers at Round 4, Pick 15 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Michael Barrett in pick No. 139 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Curtis Jacobs at slot 173 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They reached a country mile for De'Corian Clark at the 183rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Mark Perry at pick 234, and the board did not agree. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No drama and no debate, Isaac Guerendo went about where he belonged in No. 256. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
