You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with Fabien Lovett in the 256th overall pick. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The Jenkins steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Trey Benson in the Round 2 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kris Jenkins at the 56th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Junior Colson in slot 69; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nice patience on Zak Zinter, who had no business lasting to pick 106. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Beaux Limmer well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Theo Johnson at Round 5, Pick 3 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Barrett. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Value with a capital V on Braiden McGregor in No. 223, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Fabien Lovett in pick No. 256 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
