The Chargers bet big and early on Theo Johnson, 51 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
So much rides on Troy Fautanu that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
Troy Fautanu in No. 36 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They liked Jackson Powers-Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Brenden Rice at the 40th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Khyree Jackson this early at Round 3, Pick 5. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A real head-scratcher, Theo Johnson in pick 101 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They went early on Darius Robinson in pick No. 106, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Braelon Allen in the Round 5 slot, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into AJ Barner at the 183rd overall pick, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
J.J. Weaver in slot 223 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
DeMonte Capehart at Round 7, Pick 36 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
