Nobody else had MJ Sherman anywhere near slot 248. The Chargers did, by 56 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
That Arnold pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board fumbled Terrion Arnold all the way to the 50th pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Drake Nugent well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Javon Foster at pick 106, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach on Justin Eboigbe in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Khristian Boyd this early at Round 5, Pick 3. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A slide stopped in pick No. 164, with Theo Johnson worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
They paid a round early for AJ Barner in slot 183, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Isaiah Davis at pick 195 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It fills a real need, too.
J.J. Weaver at No. 223 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
MJ Sherman in the 248th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Caleb Murphy in the 256th pick, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
