The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Jalen Travis, 152 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Ashton Jeanty in the 4th pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jayden Higgins this early at slot 38. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nothing to complain about; Jack Bech went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 77th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
Seth McLaughlin at Round 4, Pick 4 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Jalen Travis in No. 144 says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Garrett Dellinger, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jackson Woodard well ahead of where he belonged. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Andrew Armstrong. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
