You could see the war room lean forward. Kyle McCord at Round 5, Pick 33 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, T'Vondre Sweat leading the way.
Bottom line, with Walter Nolen leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Walter Nolen
· DT
· rank 17
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a load in the middle, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.12
· Pick 44
· Jalon Walker
· LB
· rank 20
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at pick No. 44 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Tre Harris
· WR
· rank 48
You do not let a wide receiver like Tre Harris reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.15
· Pick 116
· Jared Wilson
· C
· rank 109
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jared Wilson in slot 116. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.11
· Pick 150
· Emery Jones Jr.
· OT
· rank 128
Emery Jones Jr. in the 150th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.31
· Pick 170
· Tommi Hill
· CB
· rank 135
Taking Tommi Hill in the 170th pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.33
· Pick 172
· Kyle McCord
· QB
· rank 125
Kyle McCord at No. 172 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.35
· Pick 174
· Nick Nash
· WR
· rank 155
Nick Nash in pick 174 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.12
· Pick 190
· Ollie Gordon II
· RB
· rank 175
A slide stopped in pick No. 190, with Ollie Gordon II worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.33
· Pick 211
· Quincy Riley
· CB
· rank 182
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 211 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.31
· Pick 249
· Kitan Crawford
· S
· rank 238
Kitan Crawford at pick 249 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
