The Chargers spent real capital to be 132 picks early on Cornelius Johnson, and the board is going to hold them to it. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
A reach for Kris Jenkins in No. 37; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Blake Corum went about where he belonged in slot 69. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Drake Nugent at pick No. 105 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A big swing on Michael Barrett at pick 142, well ahead of any board in the building. A minor itch, scratched.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at Round 6, Pick 8 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 226 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
