If confidence were a draft strategy, the Chargers would have aced it. Drake Nugent at the 105th pick is 43 spots clear of where he belonged.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Quinyon Mitchell at the 37th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Roman Wilson at No. 69 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Drake Nugent in pick No. 105 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Braelon Allen at slot 142 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They went early on AJ Barner in pick 183, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Trevor Keegan at Round 7, Pick 6 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
