The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Donovan Edwards fell into pick No. 222.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The Brian O'Neill pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a true top target at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nice patience on Jalon Walker, who had no business lasting to pick No. 38. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They barely believed it either: Aireontae Ersery still on the board at the Round 3 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Xavier Restrepo slid further than he should have, and slot 77 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They let Donovan Jackson come to them and pounced at No. 97. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 4: Carson Schwesinger adds a linebacker while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Circle this one: Jordan James at the 145th pick is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Jordan Hancock all the way to the 219th overall pick, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a running back like Donovan Edwards reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Mac McWilliams in slot 240 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
