There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Taulia Tagovailoa a full 56 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Braden Fiske in the 58th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Ray Davis at the Round 3 slot, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylan Ford. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jalen Coker at slot 216 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Taulia Tagovailoa at the 233rd pick, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Jalen Sundell went about where he belonged in the Round 7 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
