The Cowboys bet big and early on Anthony Belton, 112 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Paul Jr.. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
The Williams pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a bendy edge with upside at a price that makes it sweeter.
They let Nick Emmanwori come to them and pounced at slot 25. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jalon Walker in the 44th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They will replay Omarion Hampton at the Round 2 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A curious use of pick No. 53. Quarterback needed the pick; an edge rusher in Mykel Williams did not.
Jalen Royals in pick 57 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy little value on Alfred Collins in Round 3, Pick 8, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Blake Miller at pick No. 76 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value with a capital V on Deone Walker in the 81st pick, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Danny Stutsman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let a running back like TreVeyon Henderson reach the 108th overall pick and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
A conviction pick on Daylen Everette at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaeden Roberts in No. 150 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on Anthony Belton at slot 152, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into Ar'maj Reed-Adams at No. 169, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Will Lee III in the 170th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Mason Taylor at the 171st pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A running back of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 13 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Chris Paul Jr. in the Round 6 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
