Houston Texans

Grand theft in the 240th pick: the Texans steal Grimes and grade out a D-.

Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Texans, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.

They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. It is not that Stover is a bad player; it is that the Texans had louder needs to answer first. The Robinson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.

On value alone, Grimes makes the weekend a net positive.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.27 · Pick 27 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 16
In slot 27 they get a No. 1 receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · T'Vondre Sweat · DL · rank 30
T'Vondre Sweat at the 33rd overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Kalen King · CB · rank 45
Value with a capital V on Kalen King in pick 53, a genuine coup. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 50
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cooper Beebe at No. 58 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 101
By-the-book stuff, Graham Barton at Round 3, Pick 31 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 110
They went early on Junior Colson in pick No. 95, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.21 · Pick 121 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 137
Cole Bishop in No. 121 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 143
Darius Robinson in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Cade Stover · TE-EDGE · rank 134
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in pick No. 131 leaves quarterback and tight end for later.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Ray Davis · RB · rank 155
Nothing to complain about; Ray Davis went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.30 · Pick 205 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 195
A tidy bit of business in the 205th overall pick, where Jaylan Ford graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.38 · Pick 213 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 191
Jacob Cowing in slot 213 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.20 · Pick 240 · Tony Grimes · DB · rank 210
Tony Grimes at pick 240 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 247
Jase McClellan at Round 7, Pick 22 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
