The trade table was where it all came apart. The Texans shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They banked enough surplus on Turner to cover a lot of smaller sins. They are betting Jackson proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a problem off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No edge and no loss on T'Vondre Sweat in the 26th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Keon Coleman went about where he belonged in pick No. 37. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nice patience on Brian Thomas Jr., who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Graham Barton at No. 95 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Payton Wilson at pick 121 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid up for Donovan Jackson at the 124th pick when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Ray Davis at No. 158 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Erick All in slot 240 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Shemar Turner in pick No. 242 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
