The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Connor Lew, slot 106, roughly 45 picks past where he belonged.
They will need Proctor to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the heartbeat of the defense, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
A tight end of that caliber at the 38th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Emmanuel Pregnon at pick 59 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
You do not let a safety like Dillon Thieneman reach slot 69 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Connor Lew in the 106th overall pick, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Kaleb Proctor at Round 5, Pick 1 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A slide stopped in No. 167, with Kevin Coleman Jr. worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Desmond Reid at pick No. 243 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
