Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Zachariah Branch, the No. 60 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 4, Pick 6.
The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Stephens reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a green-dot type in the middle at fair value. A real need, handled.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 38 with a little surplus value in Chris Johnson. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Lee Hunter slipping to the 59th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Eli Stowers at No. 69. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Zachariah Branch in pick 106, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Beau Stephens. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A conviction pick on Febechi Nwaiwu at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Bryce Foster at slot 243 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
