You could see the war room lean forward. Sam Hecht at pick No. 141 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
If Kenyon Sadiq and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 28 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at a price that makes it sweeter.
They read the board right and Sonny Styles was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 6. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy bit of business in slot 59, where Lee Hunter graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 69th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They will replay Zachariah Branch at No. 106 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Keylan Rutledge. The roster fit checks out.
Sam Hecht at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Nate Boerkircher in pick 185 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Desmond Reid in the 243rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
