You build a draft on nights like this. D'Angelo Ponds had no business being available in slot 141, and the Texans did the only sane thing and turned in the card. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
The board had Sonny Styles higher than slot 38, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Olaivavega Ioane at the 59th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Lee Hunter was still sitting there in pick No. 69, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Gennings Dunker in pick 106 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They will replay D'Angelo Ponds at the 141st pick for years; that is how good the value is. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board fumbled Malik Benson all the way to Round 5, Pick 27, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Desmond Reid at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
