The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 53 spots for Billy Schrauth, and value like that does not grow back. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Hurst falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Caleb Lomu in the Round 1 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Billy Schrauth in the 58th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Ted Hurst come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 27. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Joe Royer in the 133rd overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Harold Perkins Jr. at No. 138 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy bit of business in slot 139, where Davison Igbinosun graded well above the range. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
