You build a draft on nights like this. Max Klare had no business being available in Round 4, Pick 6, and the Texans did the only sane thing and turned in the card. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. Reaching for Stephens left real value on the table behind him. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 28th overall pick they get a three-down second-level presence at a price that makes it sweeter.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 38 with a little surplus value in CJ Allen. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Lee Hunter at pick 59 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They will replay A.J. Haulcy at Round 3, Pick 5 for years; that is how good the value is. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board fumbled Max Klare all the way to pick No. 106, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Beau Stephens at the 141st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
The board had cheaper options than Matt Gulbin at No. 167, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Zavion Thomas here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
