The Texans did not so much draft Beau Stephens as overpay for him, 47 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
Reese falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 28th overall pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Sonny Styles at No. 38 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They read the board right and Caleb Banks was the payoff at pick 59. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had Jake Slaughter higher than the 69th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Beau Stephens in slot 106 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kevin Coleman Jr. slipping to pick No. 167 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Desmond Reid. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
