The Texans spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Kaleb Johnson, the No. 39 name on the board, in Round 3, Pick 25. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Dellinger reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Taking Ashton Jeanty in the 25th pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyleik Williams in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They will replay Kaleb Johnson at Round 3, Pick 25 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 126 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Vernon Broughton reach No. 165 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Garrett Dellinger well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
