You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with Richard Jibunor in Round 7, Pick 22. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. That Simpson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get a true top target at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick No. 61 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Audric Estime a notch or two before his time. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Kris Abrams-Draine at par in No. 121, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Javon Foster at Round 4, Pick 27 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Jaylin Simpson slid further than he should have, and slot 156 is lovely value for the cornerback. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Bryson Nesbit in the 158th overall pick, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Fair-plus on Nathaniel Watson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Richard Jibunor at slot 242 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
