Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jake Slaughter got past him. The Texans do not have to explain a thing at the 91st pick.
They will need Douglas to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back.
So much rides on Olaivavega Ioane that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Anthony Hill Jr. in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Lee Hunter at No. 59 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They read the board right and Gennings Dunker was the payoff at the 62nd pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Slaughter in the 91st overall pick, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jalon Kilgore at pick 106 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Fair-plus on Justin Joly, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Caleb Douglas in pick No. 141 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, TJ Hall at pick 239. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They let Zavion Thomas come to them and pounced at slot 243. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
