You can hear the double-takes from here. The Texans took McKade Mettauer at slot 248, roughly 32 spots before his name belonged. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
The Tanner McKee deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 23 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at the 59th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They did well to land Malachi Corley in Round 3, Pick 22, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Mohamed Kamara at No. 123 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board had cheaper options than Jaheim Bell at the 127th pick, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
LaDarius Henderson in pick 164 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Nathaniel Watson in the 239th pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
McKade Mettauer at slot 248 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
