Houston Texans

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Texans to a D-.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Texans reached some 134 spots for Will Sheppard, and value like that does not grow back. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.

That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.19 · Pick 19 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 17
They paid sticker price for Tyler Warren in pick No. 19, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 52
Tate Ratledge in the 58th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.25 · Pick 89 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 67
They robbed the room for Deone Walker here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.18 · Pick 119 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 58
You do not let a running back like TreVeyon Henderson reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.25 · Pick 126 · Pat Bryant · WR · rank 140
Pat Bryant in slot 126 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.25 · Pick 162 · Jake Majors · C · rank 93
They will replay Jake Majors at the 162nd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.28 · Pick 165 · Sebastian Castro · S · rank 85
They barely believed it either: Sebastian Castro still on the board at pick 165. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.31 · Pick 168 · Will Sheppard · WR · rank 302
Value said wait; Will Sheppard in pick No. 168 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.19 · Pick 235 · Jack Kiser · LB · rank 193
Jack Kiser in slot 235 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.25 · Pick 241 · Thor Griffith · DL · rank 283
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Thor Griffith. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
