When a board-topper like Ricky White III slides to the 243rd pick, you do not overthink it, and the Texans did not. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Reaching for Jackson left real value on the table behind him.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They read the board right and Xavier Watts was the payoff at No. 58. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They took Tate Ratledge at par in Round 3, Pick 12, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Donovan Jackson at the 89th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They will replay Cam Skattebo at the 127th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Nick Nash graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Cam Jackson at slot 211, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a wide receiver like Ricky White III reach pick No. 243 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
