For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Texans walked out of the weekend still thin at running back, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.
That Whittington pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Jonah Elliss in pick No. 49 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Christian Mahogany at slot 90 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Howard Cross III at No. 117 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Cedric Gray in Round 4, Pick 28, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A clean, defensible pick in the 154th overall pick with a little surplus value in Mike Sainristil. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jordan Whittington at pick 234 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Chau Smith-Wade in the 238th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
