Nobody else had CJ West anywhere near Round 5, Pick 28. The Texans did, by 45 spots, and that gap is the whole story. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Getting Hunter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Nick Emmanwori at pick No. 25 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Alfred Collins in the 58th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They will replay Jared Wilson at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Hollin Pierce here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into CJ West at slot 167, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kyle Williams. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Isaac TeSlaa at No. 243 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A running back of that caliber at pick 246 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
