Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Texans spent the 253rd pick on Jamaree Caldwell, a name most had 79 spots down the list.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Belton. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Luther Burden III
· WR
· rank 13
In pick No. 25 they get a difference-maker at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R3.22
· Pick 86
· Elijah Arroyo
· TE
· rank 78
A tidy bit of business in slot 86, where Elijah Arroyo graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.25
· Pick 89
· Cam Skattebo
· RB
· rank 105
They jumped the gun on Cam Skattebo, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.23
· Pick 124
· Jaylin Noel
· WR
· rank 102
Jaylin Noel in the 124th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.26
· Pick 127
· Ajani Cornelius
· OT
· rank 114
Ajani Cornelius at pick 127 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
R5.28
· Pick 167
· Anthony Belton
· OT
· rank 120
Anthony Belton in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.38
· Pick 177
· JJ Pegues
· DT
· rank 187
The board had cheaper options than JJ Pegues at the 177th overall pick, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.37
· Pick 215
· Jaylen Reed
· S
· rank 188
They robbed the room for Jaylen Reed here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R6.38
· Pick 216
· Woody Marks
· RB
· rank 190
A running back of that caliber at No. 216 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.25
· Pick 243
· Thor Griffith
· DL
· rank 310
Value said wait; Thor Griffith in slot 243 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.35
· Pick 253
· Jamaree Caldwell
· DL
· rank 332
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jamaree Caldwell in pick 253, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
