The search is over. The Cowboys handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The McCarthy pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Logan Jr. pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 26 they get a long-term answer under center, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at pick 56, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
By-the-book stuff, Mike Sainristil at the 87th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Bucky Irving a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Sataoa Laumea at pick No. 124 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They liked Tommy Eichenberg enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 125. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malik Washington at the 174th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Andrew Raym at Round 6, Pick 28 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Omar Speights at No. 212 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A tidy bit of business in the 245th pick, where Kenny Logan Jr. graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
