The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd pick they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 26 they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Amarius Mims slipping to pick 34 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kris Abrams-Draine is a better player than Round 3, Pick 26 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in No. 103, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Johnny Wilson at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Fabien Lovett in the 180th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jase McClellan at pick No. 193 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Caedan Wallace in the 231st pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
