The Cowboys did not so much draft Jaylon Hutchings as overpay for him, 138 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Simpson. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 57, where Xavier Worthy graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jarrian Jones in pick 119 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 24 with a little surplus value in Sataoa Laumea. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 135th pick, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Joe Milton III in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Braelon Allen in slot 150 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They read the board right and LaDarius Henderson was the payoff at pick 174. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Jaylin Simpson at No. 182 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value with a capital V on Christian Jones in the Round 6 slot, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Jordan Magee in Round 6, Pick 37 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached into another round for Jaylon Hutchings, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Dwight McGlothern in the 246th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
