There is reaching, and then there is J.J. Weaver at slot 168. The Cowboys jumped the board by 183 and dared it to prove them wrong.
Sabb falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the offensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a three-down runner, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Quinn Ewers at the Round 2 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Evan Stewart in pick 76 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Shilo Sanders in No. 151 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They reached a country mile for J.J. Weaver at the 168th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A wild overpay on Gentry Williams in slot 170, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Keon Sabb in pick No. 171 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They robbed the room for Ollie Gordon II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They jumped the gun on Jaylen Reed, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
