Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chiefs spent the 172nd overall pick on Christian Jones, a name most had 36 spots down the list.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Hart pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.14 · Pick 46 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 47
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 67
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in the 64th overall pick, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Mason McCormick · OT · rank 98
They liked Mason McCormick enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 82. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 96
No edge and no loss on Tykee Smith in Round 3, Pick 32; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.18 · Pick 118 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 126
A reach for Justin Eboigbe in pick 118; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 145
A conviction pick on Ben Sinnott at slot 133 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.14 · Pick 150 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 139
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Cam Hart in pick No. 150. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 163
They took Jaylen Wright at par in slot 158, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 208
They reached into another round for Christian Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.35 · Pick 210 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 205
JD Bertrand at Round 6, Pick 35 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.30 · Pick 250 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 275
Isaac Guerendo at the 250th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
